Practical tips to help care professionals reduce stress

It's stress awareness week - and taking care of a loved one can be exhausting and overwhelming, and it's important to take the time to recharge your batteries. Looking after your own health and wellbeing will do wonders for you and it'll make it easier to help and support the person you're caring for too. Self-care is a remedy for stress, as it builds resilience so that you can cope when times are tougher.

Ready to give self-care a go? Start with these easy ideas...

1. Stay connected

Making new friends, or staying in touch with old ones might be the last thing on your mind when there is so much to juggle day-to-day. But, as they say; “a problem shared is a problem halved” and reconnecting with a good friend can feel like a breath of fresh air. Or if you’d prefer, you could reach out to other caregivers who can relate to the highs and lows of caring.

Tip → join our Facebook community to chat with other care givers and share tips and advice.

2. Say 'yes' to help

You may feel that you should be able to handle everything yourself, or that you shouldn't burden others with your worries. The truth is, there are people around you who want to help, and sharing the load can make a world of difference.

Tip → Create a list of tasks that you need help with so you’re ready to say yes - anything from babysitting the kids to walking the dog, or even helping you tackle the gardening.

3. Don't be too hard on yourself

You'll have days where you feel fully in control and others where you don't know where to begin. Don't feel guilty for wanting to scream or take some time out. You are offering endless kindness and compassion to your loved one; it's time for you to treat yourself with equal care.

Tip → take a moment to recognise the selfless job that you are doing, the compromises you are making, and the strength you show through thick and thin.
