Managing upwards: building the relationship with your owner or director
You know what your service needs. Getting a yes is the harder part.
A free hour for registered managers, with three practical tools for working with your owner or director and asking for what your service needs in a way that keeps the relationship intact.
What the hour covers
You carry most of the day-to-day running of your service, but you don't always have the authority or the resources to do what you can see it needs. You'll leave with three tools:
- What a good two-way working relationship looks like, and how to build one whatever your owner or director's style. You can use it with your own team too.
- How to sort what's in your control, what you can influence and what you need to let go of
- A five-step structure for the conversation you've been putting off, including what to do when the answer isn't yes
How it runs
For the first 30 minutes, Alexis walks through the three tools with real examples. We'll record that part.
The last 30 minutes is live coaching. You'll pick the tool that fits your situation and work it through, and two or three people will volunteer to be coached by Alexis there and then. You don't have to volunteer to get something out of it. We won't record this half, and it won't be shared. It's for the real situation, not the version you'd put in an email.
Come with one situation you're dealing with right now. That's all the preparation it needs.
This is for you if
- You've got coordinators or supervisors between you and the care, and you're still the one accountable
- You're not always sure what you can decide yourself and what needs sign-off from your owner or director
- You've said yes to something because it was easier than having the conversation
- There's something you'd like your owner or director's backing on, and you're not sure how to ask
Two of the four is enough.
Probably not for you if
- You're setting up, or under about 30 clients, and still doing the visits yourself.
- You're a head of care or quality director governing several registered services. This sits a level below you.
- You want a qualification. This isn't accredited and won't count towards anything.
- You're after a space to vent about your owner or director. This hour is about improving how you work together.
