My career began in sales and commercial strategy within the consumer goods space – roles that always kept me at the frontline, interacting directly with customers. When I transitioned into the software world via a customer success role, I found myself even closer to the needs and problems of the people I served. It was there that I had a realisation: I could see clear, tangible opportunities to provide greater value, both for the customer and the business. I wanted to do more than just listen; I wanted to build the solutions.
This desire to act on those opportunities led me to product management. I fell in love with the work and haven't looked back since. After spending time leading a product development team at my previous company, I knew what I was looking for next. My first role in software had been for a mission-driven startup, and it felt incredibly rewarding to apply technology for a positive purpose. I wanted to find that feeling again, but on a bigger scale.
Why Birdie?
When I started my search, I was specifically looking for companies in the 'tech for good' space. Birdie immediately stood out. It wasn't just that they were a leader in homecare software; the mission felt personal. I have my own experiences with people I care about who needed care in the home, and I saw firsthand what a profound difference it made in their lives. The mission to improve that experience for everyone resonated deeply, and I knew this was where I wanted to be.
A day in the life: balance and collaboration
My days are varied, starting from my morning routine. At least half the week, I like to begin my day with a workout. I use ClassPass to shop around for different studios and classes, which keeps things interesting. Recently, I’ve taken up kettlebells – after my first class, I couldn't walk for three days, which told me I needed to go back and I now do it weekly! I also do a lot of yoga, circuit classes, and try to sneak in a Barry’s workout when I’m in London. On other mornings, I prefer to wake up a bit slower, enjoying a cup of tea and a book before I sit down at my desk to catch up on Slack and emails.
A perfect day at work, for me, is all about balance. So much of a product manager's role is about communication and enabling others. A good day means at least half of it is spent in conversation. My first priority is always speaking with our partners – the care agencies we serve. In these sessions, I'll ask discovery questions, we'll test a prototype we've built and get their feedback, or we'll check in on a feature that's in beta testing before a full release.
The other side of that collaboration is with my internal teams. I work closely with my product development team to ensure we’re all aligned on our goals for the day and the week. I also connect with people from other departments like marketing, sales, and customer success, making sure they have the context and information they need to perform their roles.
Then, there’s my deep focus time. This is when I take all the rich insights I’ve gathered from customer conversations, market research, and data analysis, and synthesise them. I'll spend a couple of hours writing strategy documents, planning our roadmap, and ensuring we’re prepared for what’s to come. My perfect day is a blend of these different modes of working – collaboration, listening, and strategic thinking.
The people and the purpose
What I love most about Birdie’s culture is how the mission attracts people who genuinely care – about the work, about doing a great job, and about each other. It creates this amazing mix of super-talented individuals from all walks of life. Whether they come from a background in care, technology, or commercial, they are all drawn to Birdie’s brand and purpose.
Everyone is incredibly supportive and willing to go the extra mile for our partners, which fosters a uniquely positive and motivating environment. Beyond that, I feel like I am constantly learning. Working alongside people with so much diverse experience and talent is a privilege. That combination – a supportive atmosphere filled with highly skilled people – is a powerful one. It’s inspiring to work with a team that is not only brilliant at what they do, but also deeply committed to why they do it.
Solving problems, big and small
Of course, like any role, mine comes with its challenges. The hardest part for me is the constant context-switching. If I’m deep in a strategic task and have to pull away to find an answer to a question I don't immediately know, it can break my flow of work. The work of sleuthing through old Notion documents, Gong recordings, and shared folders used to be a little slower than I’d like.
But one of the best things about Birdie is how we’re empowered with cutting-edge tools. We use an AI-powered tool called Dust, which acts as a smart agent connected to all of our internal knowledge bases. When I need to find something, instead of manually searching through various different platforms, I can simply ask Dust a question. It queries our own internal documentation directly, giving me a focused, relevant answer in seconds. It has been a real blessing, turning this task into something quick and easy. It’s a perfect example of how Birdie invests in its teams, allowing us to focus our time and energy on what truly matters: building valuable products for the people we serve.
